Beautiful Lady "Fumi"

"Bijin Mono" ("Beautiful Lady") is a popular genre of Hakata dolls. One such Bijin doll design, "Fumi" is popular around the world as a doll that expresses the simple beauty of a Japanese lady, especially the internal pure love that is presented using the entire body. This doll was created from a model made by Usao Ota, a craftsman who has won many awards including the Prime Minister Award and is especially known for Bijin Mono and Kabuki-themed dolls.

Born in Hakata in February 1934. After becoming independent as an artist in 1958, Mr. Matsuo has been involved in the manufacture, wholesale and retail of Hakata dolls as the representative of Biken Kogeisha, Ltd. He has contributed to making the beauty of Hakata dolls well known not just within his prefecture but also in the Kanto and Kansai regions of Japan. He is especially well known for "Bijin Mono" ("Beautiful Lady") and "Warabe Mono" ("Children") themed dolls. His works have been displayed in numerous exhibitions and shows and has won many awards. Mr. Matsuo has been contributing to the development of the Hakata doll industry as vice director of the Hakata Doll Trade Union.
