Oju-bako by HAKUICHI

Hors d’oeuvre presentation box set

Present your culinary creations in this delightful nest of boxes. Though enjoyed as a set of serving-dishes at home or on picnics, in Japan, multi-tiered cuisine boxes (Oju-bako) are widely used over the New Year period to store and serve the hors d'oeuvre type delicacies traditionally appreciated over the festive season. (Can also be used for storing a multitude of other small treasures).

The brilliance of traditional Kanazawa foil work

In an agreeable modern take on a traditional item, this charming three-tiered version is made of cool black ABS (very tough and impact resistant). With the exception of the spaces required for the alphabet design, the entire outer surface is coated in a layer of adhesive. Silver or gold leaf is then laid over the top. As the leafing adheres only to the adhesive, perfectly defined black letters contrast beautifully with the sophisticated hues of matte silver or gold, which is given a protective coat of clear polyurethane to finish.

Brief history of ‘leafing’

Evoking a sense of romanticism with its solemn glitter, Kyoto’s Kinkakuji temple (Golden Pavilion) is one of the most impressive sights in Japan. The traditional art of gold leafing that was used to create this beautiful temple still exists today. As well as for the decoration of temples, shrines, Buddhist altars and its associated instruments, it is used in a range of other fields such as screen and cuisine-box making, and in the production of handicrafts, such as vessels and ornaments.

The production of gold leaf began in Kanazawa City in Ishikawa prefecture at the end of the 16th century and is still the center of the industry today. The feudal lord at the time, Toshie Maeda, invited artisans to live and work in Kanazawa. The Shogunate in Edo (Tokyo), however, restricted gold beating to certain areas, such as Edo and Kyoto. It wasn’t, therefore, until the second half of the nineteenth century that the production of gold leaf was publicly revived in Kanazawa.

Gold leaf production

A rolling mill is used to thin gold that has been mixed with traces of silver and copper. The thinned sheet is sandwiched between special papers and beaten repeatedly with a machine to a thickness of around 2/10,000 mm - so thin it will disappear if you rub it between your fingers. Kanazawa produces close to 100% of the domestic output of gold, silver and platinum leaf. Known collectively as Kanazawa haku, leafing is one of Japan’s designated traditional crafts.
