AK (Akemi Kakihara) is a hugely talented NYC based singer, songwriter and producer from Japan.
With a sound that freely crosses the boundaries of R&B, Hip Hop and House, AK has released over 200 songs on her own albums and those she has written and produced for other artists. A global citizen equally at home in New York, Tokyo and Europe, AK is a very accomplished artist.
She owes her sophisticated musical taste to her father who treated little AK to a steady diet of great music such as Jazz and movie sound tracks. Showing early signs of talent, AK composed her first song at age 8 after hearing ‘Prelude’ by Eumir Dodato. Her style eventually shifted to a combination of Soul, Jazz, Funk, Bosssa Nova, etc., known as ‘Crossover’.
Record labels first became interested in AK’s music in 1986 when she was 19. As a singer-songwriter she released her first eight albums through Polystar Records using her full name. Her outstanding talent as a songwriter also led to other Japanese artists like Miki Imai and Tomoyo Harada having AK write for them.
Signing to EMI Music Japan in 1998 as ‘AK’, she took full control of her musical creativity and released four more albums. In addition to singing and songwriting, she oversaw every aspect of her work including arrangements, programming, sound production (selecting everything from musicians, engineers to studios), budget and artwork.
“Yes” was AK’s first self-produced album. Recorded in London in 1998, mixing engineer Roland Herrington (Swing Out Sister, Simply Red), and programmers Phil Chill (Mark Morrison) and Guy Sigworth (Madonna) helped give “Yes” its distinctive sound.
In order to work with engineer Gerry “the Gov” Brown (Brandy) and programmer Chris Bolden (En Vogue), AK chose studios in LA for her next album “Dreamin'”.
In the meantime, her love for new style R&B grew stronger by the day. Finally lured to the sanctuary of R&B recordings, New York City, AK’s third full album “Love” was recorded at Chung King Studios with engineer Kevin “KD” Davis (Destiny’s Child, Ashanti, also a partner of She’kspere of Destiny’s Child fame) and programmer Demian Desandies (Carl Thomas).
AK’s creativity blossomed first in London, then LA, and in 2001 found a home in NYC. That same year, Francois Kevorkian and Eric Kupper’s remix of the single “Say That You Love Me” (released in the US through King Street Sounds) gave AK her first big ticket to the world.
Even before its release, “Say That You Love Me” promos were being heavily played by such big name NY DJs as Francois Kevorkian & Danny Krivit of Body & Soul, “Little” Louie Vega, Kim Lightfoot and Frankie Feliciano. The single was a huge hit in the US, Japan and Europe topping many charts worldwide.
Following AK’s 2nd US single "No One Else" (2003), "Shining Your Way" was released in 2007 – a collaboration with Jephte Guillaume that again raced up charts worldwide. Further Top 10 successes were followed with "Beautiful Sunrise" (2007 with STUDIO APARTMENT), "I'll Be There" (2008 with Sound Around) and a Stevie Wonder cover, "Golden Lady" (2008).
Reaching No. 1 on the iTunes Dance Charts, "All Day, All Night, Always" is an AK and Anan Ryoko collaboration released in March 2010. “Heaven Is Right Here” marked AK’s first collaboration with the Ananda Project and was released as her 4th US single in July 2010.
With a sound that freely crosses the boundaries of R&B, Hip Hop and House, AK has released over 200 songs on her own albums and those she has written and produced for other artists. A global citizen equally at home in NY, Tokyo and Europe, AK is a very accomplished artist.
With the magic of New York City, her legendary DJ husband Danny Krivit, and the other magicians at King Street Sounds as her catalyst, the Japan-born diva keeps the love vibes flowing. Oh, and by the way AK, I love you. There, I said it.
ALEXCIOUS (Alex Corp.) continues to support AK’s (Akemi Kakihara) ongoing efforts to provide relief to those affected by the East Japan Disaster.
