Tousai by Miyagawa Kozai

Heritage Pieces Worthy of National Treasure Status

Enchanting cups for the Sake aficionado

The Tousai Sake Cup is fashioned using technology and a design style originally developed during the early Ming Dynasty (1368 -1644). Each one is individually created by Miyagawa Kozai, the current (6th generation) head of the Makuzu kiln, using techniques nurtured and perfected by the legendary master, Miyagawa Kozan (1842 -1916). Eloquently depicting flora and fauna in the masterful hand of Kozai, one of the cup's most significant features is the use of ‘spring fresh green’ as the base color. As a mark of authenticity, the base of each cup bears the characters of the Makuzu kiln drawn in Kozai's own hand and reads, 'Makuzu Kozai'.

Ming to Meiji

The Ming Dynasty was one of China's most important in terms of technological and artistic advancement. Though Japanese potters drew heavily on the new ceramic technology of the period, they added their own twist, which often resulted in improvements. A great variety of pottery was produced at kilns throughout Japan throughout the Edo and Meiji Periods, but the extraordinary pieces created at the Makuzu Kiln by the legendary master, Miyagawa Kozan, achieved great recognition and remain to this day some of the most highly prized.

Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kozan

The astonishingly versatile and accomplished Meiji potter, Makuzu Kozan (1842 -1916), is acclaimed as one of the greatest ceramic artists of the Meiji period (1868 -1912). After the opening of Japan to the West in the mid-nineteenth century, the Meiji period was a time of tumultuous change for Japanese society. Makuzu-yaki’s shift from its origins in a traditional workshop in Kyoto to maturity in a prolific factory in the newly opened port of Yokohama, is part of the story. Kozan's ability to cater to the demands of a new Western export market and to incorporate new Western glaze techniques led to enormous success, both in Japan and abroad. Accolade after accolade followed the appearance of his work at international exhibitions including Expos in Paris and Sydney, and World Expos in both Philadelphia and St. Louis. The legendary master was appointed an artist to the Japanese Imperial household in 1882; the absolute pinnacle of the world of pottery at the time.
